John and Joan Latowski tragically killed in Port St. Lucie accident

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. – A Memorial Day traffic collision in Port St. Lucie has claimed a second life, according to the Port St. Lucie Department.

The accident occurred on May 26 at the intersection of N.W. Glades Cut Off Road and N.W. Commerce Centre Drive. Police said that 74-year-old John Latowski was driving a 2011 BMW convertible with his 72-year-old passenger Joan Latowski. At around 1:30 p.m., their vehicle was struck by a 2023 Kia operated by a 24-year-old driver, who authorities say failed to yield the right-of-way.

Joan Latowski was declared deceased at a local medical facility, while John Latowski remained in critical condition following the incident. He has also now succumbed to his injuries.

The driver and three passengers in the Kia were transported to an area hospital but sustained non-serious injuries.

The collision remains under police investigation.

Police records indicate this intersection has been the site of 31 traffic accidents since 2020, with two proving fatal.

CRASH INVESTIGATION

The Federal Highway Administration reports that around 40 percent of car accidents occur at intersections, often due to drivers failing to stop at stop signs or red lights. Common reasons for these violations include impatience, reckless driving, and distractions. Candice Bond, an experienced auto accident attorney, emphasized the need for an independent investigation to safeguard a victim’s rights.

“It is imperative to come to a determination of the exact cause of these types of accidents. An attorney has the resources to review applicable insurance coverage, hire expert witnesses, run background checks, and locate witnesses. We carefully guide the family of the victim through the process,” said Candice Bond, a managing partner with Bond Legal.

She noted that in such cases such as it is important to have an independent investigation conducted sooner than later to preserve any evidence.

“In addition to a police report, an attorney will carefully review what may have contributed to the crash,” said Bond. “A lawyer has the resources to hire expert witnesses, conduct driver background checks, locate witnesses to the crash, and review applicable insurance coverage. Serving as an advocate, an attorney can help guide an injury victim through what can be a complicated process.”

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the results of any investigations, the family of John and Joan Latowski may pursue a wrongful death claim. Survivors of wrongful death victims may seek damages for loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional distress following a catastrophic accident such as this.

Bond noted, “Grieving families of victims are sometimes overwhelmed by the legal processes that are in place to protect their rights. An attorney can be a valuable and compassionate resource to help guide a family during this difficult time, and ensure that those left behind receive the restitution they are entitled to.”
