Yaya Dia killed after hit-and-run crash on Brooklyn’s Ocean Parkway

BROOKLYN, NY — October 05, 2026 A 62-year-old Lyft driver died after a hit-and-run collision involving three vehicles early Monday on Ocean Parkway in Brooklyn, according to the New York Police Department.

The crash occurred shortly after midnight near Avenue S in the Midwood area. Police said a black Audi traveling south on Ocean Parkway struck the rear of a Toyota Camry being driven by Yaya Dia.

The force of the collision caused the Camry to spin into a Toyota RAV4. The Camry and RAV4 subsequently left the roadway and struck trees, while the Audi also crashed nearby.

Dia was removed from the damaged Camry and transported to Maimonides Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead. A 39-year-old woman who was riding in the back seat of the Camry suffered serious neck and back injuries and was hospitalized in critical condition.

The driver of the RAV4, a 25-year-old man, suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene.

Police said the Audi was abandoned after the crash. Witnesses reportedly saw several male occupants leave the disabled vehicle and depart in another vehicle. Investigators continue to search for the driver and others who may have been involved. No arrests had been reported in connection with the crash at the time of the report.

FATAL ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION

The NYPD is continuing its investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fatal collision and the subsequent departure of the Audi’s occupants.

Investigators are expected to examine the sequence of impacts, vehicle damage, roadway conditions and available surveillance footage as they work to identify the driver. Witness accounts and physical evidence from the abandoned Audi may also help authorities determine what occurred immediately before and after the crash.

In cases such as this, national legal analyst Candice Bond has emphasized the importance of promptly conducting an independent investigation following a serious hit-and-run collision. Establishing how the crash occurred can require a detailed review of evidence, including roadway conditions, visibility, lighting, vehicle positions and other factors that could help clarify the circumstances surrounding the collision.

Bond has also noted that hit-and-run investigations can be particularly challenging because the responsible driver may leave before law enforcement can obtain an immediate statement or conduct an on-scene evaluation. Preserving evidence and identifying witnesses can therefore become important parts of determining liability.

National legal analyst Stefano Formica has similarly stressed that families dealing with a fatal crash may need to closely follow the official investigation while protecting their legal interests.

The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities have not announced any arrests in connection with the Brooklyn crash.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Depending on the findings of the investigation, Dia’s surviving family members could potentially have grounds to pursue a wrongful death claim against a responsible party.

A wrongful death case may involve damages associated with the loss of a loved one, including loss of companionship, emotional suffering and other losses recognized under applicable law. The specific rights available to surviving family members can depend on the circumstances of the crash and the laws governing the claim.

In cases such as this, Formica has explained that losing a family member unexpectedly in a motor vehicle collision can create significant emotional and financial challenges. He has emphasized the importance of keeping track of the official investigation and understanding the family’s legal rights while authorities determine what happened.

Bond has also highlighted the value of a thorough investigation in fatal hit-and-run cases. Evidence concerning the roadway, vehicles, witnesses and circumstances leading to the collision can be important when determining whether another party may be legally responsible.
