Two drivers injured in Linn County head-on collision, sheriff says

LINN COUNTY, IA — October 24, 2026. Two drivers suffered serious injuries in a head-on collision on Highway 1 near Mosher Lane in Linn County, Iowa.

According to the Linn County Sheriff’s Office, the crash occurred at approximately 8:19 a.m. on Highway 1 between Martelle and Mount Vernon.

Authorities identified the drivers as Stephen Jewell, 54, of Dyersville, and Colleen Arnold, 37, of Mount Vernon. Jewell was operating a 2026 Ford Mustang when it collided head-on with a 2010 Chevrolet Malibu driven by Arnold.

Both drivers became trapped inside their vehicles following the impact and required extrication by emergency responders. They sustained serious injuries and were transported to University of Iowa Health Care for treatment.

A 63-year-old woman from Dyersville who was riding as a passenger in the Mustang suffered minor injuries and was also taken to a hospital.

Linn County Sheriff’s Rescue, the Lisbon-Mount Vernon Police Department, and fire and ambulance crews from Mount Vernon, Lisbon, and Martelle responded to the scene. Anamosa Ambulance also assisted.

HEAD-ON ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION NEEDED

The Linn County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the circumstances surrounding the collision.

In head-on crashes, investigators typically examine vehicle positions, impact damage, roadway conditions, visibility, and witness accounts to establish how the collision occurred. Potential contributing factors may include driver distraction, fatigue, excessive speed, impaired driving, or an error in vehicle positioning. However, no specific cause of this crash has been confirmed in the available report.

Candice Bond, an experienced auto accident attorney and national legal analyst for Accident Injury News, emphasizes the importance of a thorough investigation in cases such as this. Preserving physical evidence, reviewing available video footage, interviewing witnesses, and consulting accident reconstruction specialists can help investigators determine the sequence of events and identify any contributing factors.

An independent review may also help injured individuals understand their legal options while ensuring that relevant evidence is preserved.

PERSONAL INJURY CLAIM

Stephen Jewell and Colleen Arnold may be eligible to pursue personal injury claims, depending on the investigation’s findings and the available evidence establishing liability.

Stefano Formica, Of Counsel with Bond Legal and a national legal analyst for Accident Injury News, explains that serious crash injuries can create substantial financial and personal challenges. Potential damages in applicable cases may include emergency treatment, ongoing medical expenses, rehabilitation, lost wages, reduced future earning capacity, and compensation for pain and emotional distress.

In cases such as this, injured individuals may benefit from understanding their rights before accepting an insurance settlement. Reviewing medical documentation, insurance coverage, and evidence concerning the collision can help establish the extent of recoverable losses.

Any potential claim will depend on the circumstances of the crash, the evidence gathered, and applicable Iowa law. The investigation’s findings will be important in determining whether either driver has grounds to seek compensation.
