Shirish Desai killed in Monongalia I-68 crash, according to sheriff.

MORGANTOWN, WV — October 11, 2026. A Pennsylvania passenger died and three West Virginia residents were injured in a single-vehicle crash on Interstate 68 eastbound in Monongalia County early Sunday morning, according to the Monongalia County Sheriff’s Office.

Shirish Desai of Pennsylvania was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene. Driver Naren Patel of West Virginia lost control of the car near the Cheat Lake exit around 8:20–8:30 a.m. The vehicle left the right side of the roadway, struck an embankment, and began to spin. During the sequence, Desai was thrown into the westbound lanes.

Two additional passengers, Chandrakantbhai Patel and Yogesh Patel, both of West Virginia, sustained injuries and were taken to a local hospital for treatment. Their conditions were not immediately detailed. Interstate 68 was closed in both directions for about two hours while crews cleared the scene. Assisting agencies included the West Virginia State Police, Monongalia County EMS, Brookhaven Volunteer Fire Department, and Cheat Lake Volunteer Fire Department.

FATAL SINGLE-VEHICLE ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION

Deputies reported that the driver lost control while traveling eastbound. The vehicle departed the right shoulder, entered the embankment, and spun, resulting in the passenger’s ejection. The cause of the loss of control remains under review as part of the completed investigation by the Monongalia County Sheriff’s Office under Sheriff Todd Forbes. No additional factors such as weather, speed, or mechanical issues have been publicly confirmed at this stage.

In cases such as this, national legal analysts emphasize the importance of a thorough examination of all contributing elements. Candice Bond, a personal-injury attorney experienced in catastrophic injury matters, has noted that single-vehicle roadway departures often require close scrutiny of vehicle dynamics, road conditions, possible distraction or impairment indicators, and whether any roadway design or maintenance factors played a role. She has explained that families in similar situations benefit from early preservation of evidence, including vehicle data recorders, scene photographs, and witness statements, because insurance carriers frequently move quickly to limit exposure.

Stefano Formica, a trial attorney focused on wrongful-death and serious-injury cases, has pointed out that ejection from a vehicle significantly increases the severity of outcomes and can raise questions about restraint use, seating position, and the forces involved in the spin and impact sequence. In cases such as this, he has observed that determining fault is not always limited to the driver’s actions; investigators and later civil evaluators also look at whether the vehicle remained within its lane prior to departure and whether any external factors contributed. Formica has stressed that timely independent review often reveals details that initial police reports may not fully capture, particularly when multiple occupants are involved and hospital records later become available.

National data from sources such as the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration continue to show that roadway departure crashes remain a significant source of fatal and serious injuries on interstates, especially when an occupant is ejected.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Families affected by fatal or serious injury crashes on interstates frequently face complex insurance and liability questions. In cases such as this, analysts including Bond and Formica have explained that potential claims may involve the driver’s insurance coverage, possible underinsured motorist provisions, and any applicable vehicle or roadway-related theories once the official investigation concludes. They note that statutes of limitations apply and that early consultation helps protect rights to medical documentation, lost-income calculations, and wrongful-death damages where applicable.
