Semaj Weldon killed in Canyon Country 14 Freeway crash, CHP says.

CANYON COUNTRY, CA — October 8, 2026 A multi-vehicle rollover on the northbound 14 Freeway near the Via Princessa exit left one person dead and two others injured Thursday afternoon, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Semaj Weldon, a 28-year-old Lancaster resident, died at the scene after being ejected from a Ram pickup truck involved in the collision. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed his identity. A Kia was also involved in the crash, which occurred shortly after 4 p.m. The impact caused the truck to overturn multiple times. Two other occupants of the Ram were transported to a hospital; one sustained major injuries. The driver of the Kia left the scene without stopping, CHP reported.

Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to contact the CHP Newhall Office at (661) 600-1600. The investigation is ongoing.

CRASH INVESTIGATION NEEDED

National Highway Traffic Safety Administration data shows 8,055 people died in motor vehicle collisions during the first quarter of 2025 alone. Analysts point to driver behavior—speeding, impairment from alcohol or drugs, and distraction from cellphone use—as primary contributors to the rise in fatal crashes.

In cases such as this, Candice Bond, national legal analyst and Managing Partner at Bond Legal, stresses the importance of an independent investigation beyond the work already being done by law enforcement. “An attorney can re-interview key witnesses, examine any available surveillance footage from the crash site, and secure phone and text records from the responsible party,” Bond explained. “Time is of the essence in cases such as this one, and the victim’s family must ensure that evidence is reviewed efficiently.”

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the outcome of the investigation, relatives of Semaj Weldon may have grounds to pursue a wrongful death claim. Surviving family members in these situations can seek compensation for loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional distress that follow a fatal collision.

Stefano Formica, of counsel with Bond Legal, noted the dual impact of such losses. “We understand that losing a loved one is not only a deeply emotional loss but also an economic one,” Formica said. “If you have lost a loved one due to someone else’s negligence, contact a wrongful death attorney and get the guidance needed to obtain the justice you deserve.” He added that insurance carriers sometimes attempt to exploit limited knowledge of the law by proposing low settlements or denying claims outright. An experienced attorney can safeguard rights and prevent that from happening.
