Pedro Gavarrete killed in Covina freeway crash, according to CHP

COVINA, CA — October 23, 2026 Pedro Gavarrete, 29, died following a multi-vehicle collision on the eastbound San Bernardino (10) Freeway near Covina, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).

The collision occurred at approximately 3:29 a.m. on Friday, west of the Via Verde Street off-ramp, along the freeway stretch between Covina and San Dimas. Emergency responders pronounced Gavarrete dead at the scene.

Authorities have not yet disclosed the circumstances that led to the collision. The investigation remains ongoing as officials work to establish the sequence of events.

Incident Location

FATAL MULTI-VEHICLE ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION

The CHP is investigating the fatal collision, but further details about how the vehicles collided have not been released. Investigators may examine physical evidence, vehicle damage, witness accounts and other available information to determine the factors that contributed to the crash.

National legal analyst Candice Bond, an experienced accident attorney, emphasizes the importance of a timely and thorough investigation in cases such as this. Preserving evidence and independently reviewing the circumstances can help clarify potential liability and protect the rights of surviving family members.

Depending on the evidence, investigators may consider whether driver conduct, roadway conditions, speed or other factors played a role. No specific cause or fault has been established in this incident.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Depending on the investigation’s findings, Gavarrete’s eligible surviving family members may have grounds to pursue a wrongful death claim if negligence contributed to his death. Potential damages may include funeral and burial costs, lost financial support, and the loss of companionship and guidance.

Stefano Formica, Of Counsel with Bond Legal, explains that wrongful death claims may arise when an individual’s death results from another person’s or entity’s wrongful or negligent conduct. In cases such as this, determining whether a civil claim is appropriate requires examining the evidence and establishing whether a legally responsible party contributed to the fatal collision.

Any potential claim would depend on the facts uncovered during the investigation, applicable California law and the family’s circumstances. No finding of negligence has been announced in connection with this crash.
