Paul Reinart killed in Deaf Smith County truck crash, says DPS

HEREFORD, TX — October 16, 2026 Paul Wayne Reinart, 77, of Hereford, died following a collision involving a pickup truck and a semi-truck on State Highway 214 in Deaf Smith County, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

The crash occurred at approximately 5:13 p.m. on Friday, October 16, about three miles west of Farm-to-Market Road 1412. Reinart was a passenger in a 2019 Dodge Ram 2500 traveling east on the highway.

According to preliminary information from investigators, the pickup’s driver, a 68-year-old Hereford man, pulled onto the right shoulder while attempting to make a U-turn. At the same time, a 2010 Peterbilt tractor-trailer traveling east moved into the westbound lane to pass the pickup in a designated passing zone.

Authorities reported that the Dodge Ram turned left into the path of the passing tractor-trailer, resulting in a collision. Reinart, who was wearing a seat belt, died at the scene.

The pickup’s driver sustained serious injuries and was transported to Northwest Texas Hospital in Amarillo. The 43-year-old semi-truck driver, who was also wearing a seat belt, suffered minor injuries and was taken to Hereford Regional Medical Center.

The Texas Department of Public Safety continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash. Additional contributing factors have not been confirmed publicly.

CRASH INVESTIGATION NEEDED

The Texas Department of Public Safety is investigating the collision to establish the sequence of events and determine whether additional factors contributed to the crash. Investigators may examine vehicle movements, roadway conditions, available witness accounts and other evidence to clarify how the vehicles came into contact.

The investigation remains ongoing, and the preliminary account does not establish any final determination of fault or legal responsibility.

National legal analysts, including Candice Bond and Stefano Formica, have discussed the importance of thorough investigations in serious motor vehicle collisions. In cases such as this, a comprehensive review of the available evidence can help clarify how the collision occurred and whether any actions or circumstances contributed to the outcome.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Fatal crashes can raise complex questions involving insurance coverage, liability and the financial consequences experienced by surviving family members. The circumstances of each collision must be evaluated individually, based on verified evidence and applicable law.

National legal analysts Candice Bond and Stefano Formica emphasize the importance of establishing the facts before drawing conclusions about responsibility. In cases such as this, relevant considerations may include the vehicles’ movements, the circumstances surrounding the attempted turn, the passing maneuver and the findings of the official investigation.

Any potential claim or legal determination would depend on the evidence gathered, the applicable law and the specific facts established in the case. No conclusion regarding liability should be drawn while the investigation remains pending.

Accident Injury News will continue to follow developments as additional information becomes available from authorities.
