Pamela Lovett killed in Hilo pedestrian crash, according to HPD

HILO, HI — October 22, 2026 A 71-year-old Pahoa woman, Pamela Lovett, died after being struck by a vehicle while crossing Kanoelehua Avenue near East Kahaopea Street in Hilo, according to Hawaii Island police.

The fatal collision occurred at approximately 7:15 p.m. Thursday, October 22. Authorities reported that Lovett was crossing the roadway outside a designated crosswalk when she was hit by a 2023 Kia sedan traveling toward Hilo.

Lovett was unresponsive when emergency responders arrived and was pronounced dead at approximately 7:25 p.m. The Kia’s driver, a 39-year-old man from Pahoa, was not injured.

Police indicated that neither excessive speed nor driver inattention appeared to contribute to the collision. Investigators continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the fatal incident.

PEDESTRIAN ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION

Determining how a pedestrian collision occurred requires a careful review of the available evidence. Investigators may examine vehicle damage, roadway conditions, lighting, visibility, traffic patterns, and witness accounts to establish the sequence of events.

Candice Bond, a managing partner at Bond Legal and a national legal analyst for Accident Injury News, emphasizes the importance of a thorough, independent investigation in pedestrian fatality cases. In cases such as this, accident reconstruction specialists may help clarify how the collision unfolded and whether any contributing factors were overlooked.

The Governors Highway Safety Association estimated that 3,304 pedestrians were killed in motor vehicle crashes across the United States during the first half of 2024. Such figures highlight the continuing importance of pedestrian safety and comprehensive crash investigations.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Stefano Formica, of counsel at Bond Legal and a national legal analyst for Accident Injury News, explains that a fatal traffic collision may raise questions about negligence and potential wrongful death claims. Liability depends on the specific evidence, applicable traffic laws, and the circumstances established during the investigation.

In cases such as this, an attorney can help eligible surviving family members understand their legal options and assess potential compensation for funeral expenses, financial losses, loss of companionship, and emotional suffering, where permitted by law.

Families may also benefit from legal guidance when reviewing insurance communications and settlement offers. A careful assessment of the available evidence and potential damages can help ensure that any claim is evaluated fairly.

This report is based on publicly reported information. The investigation’s findings and any determination of legal liability remain subject to official evidence and applicable law.
