Marina Bonnette Injured in Newton County Highway 12 Crash

NEWTON, TX — October 23, 2026 Marina Bonnette, 24, was injured in a head-on collision involving two pickup trucks on Highway 12 near Highway 87 in Newton County, Texas, early Friday morning.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, a westbound Ford pickup crossed into the eastbound lane at approximately 4:20 a.m. and collided with an oncoming GMC pickup. Bonnette, a passenger in the GMC, and its 22-year-old driver, a Nevada, Texas, resident, sustained injuries and were transported to CHRISTUS St. Elizabeth Hospital. The 35-year-old Orange man driving the Ford died at the scene.

HEAD-ON CRASH INVESTIGATION

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, early estimates indicate that 39,345 people died in motor vehicle traffic crashes in 2024, a decrease of approximately 3.8 percent from the previous year. This downward trend has continued into 2025, with preliminary data for the first nine months showing an estimated 27,365 fatalities, a 6.4 percent decline compared to the same period in 2024.

While these figures represent the fourteenth consecutive quarterly decline in roadway deaths, officials note that driver error remains the primary cause of accidents. Factors such as speeding, distracted driving, and impairment continue to be the leading contributors to fatal head-on collisions across the country.

“Contributing factors to be examined include road conditions, visibility, and lighting,” said Candice Bond, a Managing Partner with Bond Legal.

“An accident reconstruction team is sometimes needed to help piece together what happened. All of these resources are necessary for helping clients receive monetary compensation for damages or a loss following a collision,” said Bond, an experienced auto accident attorney.

PERSONAL INJURY CLAIM

Depending on the investigation’s findings and applicable Texas law, injured individuals may have grounds to pursue compensation for medical expenses, lost earnings, and other eligible damages. An attorney can review the evidence, insurance coverage, and potential liability.

National legal analysts Candice Bond and Stefano Formica have discussed the importance of evidence preservation and protecting injured victims’ rights in motor vehicle cases. In cases such as this, a thorough review of medical records, crash reports, and insurance documentation can help clarify the available legal options. These are general considerations, not a determination of liability or entitlement to compensation in this collision.
