Julio Corteschairez Killed in King County Head-On Crash, WSP Says

ENUMCLAW, WA — October 19, 2026 Julio A. Corteschairez, 21, of Auburn, died in a two-vehicle head-on collision on State Route 164 near Southeast 180th Avenue in King County early Monday, October 19, according to the Washington State Patrol (WSP).

The crash occurred at approximately 3:07 a.m. when a westbound Volkswagen Passat crossed the double yellow center line and collided with an eastbound Toyota Camry, according to information attributed to the state patrol.

Investigators reported that the Volkswagen entered the opposing lane while negotiating a curve. The Camry’s driver reportedly attempted to move toward the right shoulder to avoid the approaching vehicle, but the cars collided head-on.

Both drivers died at the scene. Authorities identified Corteschairez as the Volkswagen driver. The second driver, a 60-year-old Enumclaw resident, had not been publicly identified in the available reporting pending notification of next of kin.

The collision closed the affected stretch of State Route 164 for more than five hours as authorities investigated the circumstances surrounding the fatal wreck.

CRASH INVESTIGATION

The Washington State Patrol is investigating the circumstances of the collision. Preliminary findings identified improper lane usage as the reported cause, while the role of alcohol or drugs remained undetermined in the available account.

Investigators will consider the vehicles’ movements, roadway conditions, physical evidence and other relevant information when reconstructing the events that preceded the impact. The official findings will help clarify how the collision occurred.

Candice Bond, a managing partner at Bond Legal and a national legal analyst, has emphasized the importance of independent investigations in serious roadway collisions. In cases such as this, a thorough review of available evidence may help establish the sequence of events and identify factors that contributed to a crash.

Depending on the circumstances, an investigation may involve examining vehicle damage, reviewing witness accounts, evaluating roadway evidence and consulting accident-reconstruction specialists. These steps can help clarify questions about driver conduct and potential responsibility.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Fatal collisions can leave surviving relatives facing significant emotional and financial challenges. Depending on the investigative findings and applicable Washington law, eligible family members may have grounds to explore a wrongful death claim.

Stefano Formica, Of Counsel at Bond Legal and a national legal analyst, has discussed the importance of protecting families’ legal rights following fatal accidents. In cases such as this, an assessment of potential claims generally requires examining the available evidence, applicable insurance coverage and the losses experienced by eligible surviving relatives.

Potential damages in a qualifying wrongful death action may include certain financial losses, loss of companionship and other legally recognized harm. Eligibility and recoverable damages depend on the individual circumstances and applicable law.

No conclusion about civil liability should be drawn solely from the preliminary crash findings. The investigation and any subsequent legal review would help determine whether a claim may be available.
