Jaye Smart killed in Colorado Springs crash, according to police

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO — October 2, 2026 Jaye Smart, 66, died following a two-vehicle collision at North Nevada Avenue in Colorado Springs, according to the El Paso County Coroner’s Office. The crash occurred on October 2, 2026, and involved a pickup truck and a sedan carrying Smart as a passenger.

The Colorado Springs Police Department reported that a pickup traveling north on the Interstate 25 frontage road and a sedan heading south on Corporate Drive approached North Nevada Avenue at approximately 12:30 p.m. The vehicles collided as they entered the intersection.

Smart was pronounced dead at the scene. The sedan’s driver was transported to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. Authorities have not released additional details about the circumstances leading to the collision.

Police continue to investigate the incident.

CRASH INVESTIGATION

The Colorado Springs Police Department is working to establish the circumstances that led to the fatal collision. Investigators may examine vehicle movements, intersection conditions, witness accounts and available video footage to determine how the two vehicles came into contact.

Candice Bond, a managing partner at Bond Legal and a national legal analyst for Accident Injury News, has highlighted the importance of a thorough, independent investigation in serious motor vehicle collisions. In cases such as this, reviewing physical evidence, identifying potential contributing factors and examining applicable insurance coverage can help clarify the events surrounding a crash.

An investigation may also involve accident reconstruction specialists who can analyze vehicle damage, impact points and other available evidence. These findings may help establish the sequence of events and determine whether negligence contributed to the collision. The cause of this crash has not yet been established publicly.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Depending on the investigation’s findings, Smart’s eligible surviving family members may have grounds to pursue a wrongful death claim if another party’s negligence contributed to the fatal collision. Any potential claim would depend on the available evidence, applicable Colorado law and the circumstances of the crash.

Stefano Formica, of counsel at Bond Legal and a national legal analyst for Accident Injury News, has emphasized the importance of protecting families’ legal rights following a fatal accident. In cases such as this, a wrongful death attorney may help eligible family members understand their legal options, evaluate potential damages and navigate communications with insurance companies.

Depending on the circumstances and applicable law, recoverable damages may include certain financial losses and other legally recognized harms resulting from a death. Liability and eligibility for compensation cannot be determined until the relevant facts and evidence have been evaluated.
