WHITE PLAINS, NY — October 19, 2026 Jamil B. Wilson, a 47-year-old New York State Thruway Authority maintenance worker, died after a vehicle struck him while he was carrying out roadside mowing duties on Interstate 287 in White Plains, Westchester County, according to New York State Police.
The collision occurred on the westbound Cross Westchester Expressway near mile marker 3.9 and the Exit 6 off-ramp for Broadway (Route 22), at approximately 2:17 p.m. on Monday, October 19.
Investigators reported that a 2026 Nissan initially left its travel lane and moved onto the highway shoulder before returning to the roadway and colliding with the rear of a 2025 Mazda. The Nissan subsequently left the road again and struck Wilson, who was operating a mowing tractor on the grassy roadside.
Emergency responders transported Wilson to Westchester Medical Center, where he later died. The Nissan’s driver sustained minor injuries, while the Mazda’s driver and a passenger also received hospital treatment for injuries that were not considered life-threatening, police said.
Wilson was a White Plains resident who had worked for the Thruway Authority for nearly six years. Other members of the maintenance crew were not injured in the incident, according to agency officials.
