Hazem Hussein killed in Southfield pedestrian crash, MSP says

SOUTHFIELD, MI — October 3, 2026 A 19-year-old Dearborn man, Hazem Hussein, died after being struck by a vehicle on the Lodge Freeway (M-10) in Southfield while attempting to help people involved in an earlier collision, according to Michigan State Police.

The fatal incident occurred at approximately 11:40 p.m. near Nine Mile Road, authorities reported.

Investigators said an earlier crash involving two vehicles left one car disabled across the two left lanes of southbound M-10. Hussein had reportedly parked his vehicle on the freeway’s right shoulder before crossing the roadway on foot to assist those involved in the initial collision.

As another vehicle approached the scene, its driver reportedly swerved to avoid the disabled car and struck Hussein.

Emergency personnel arrived and attempted to save his life, including performing CPR. Despite their efforts, Hussein was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver who struck Hussein remained at the location and cooperated with investigators. Police reported no immediate indications of impairment, and no charges had been announced in the initial report.

Southfield police officers and Southfield Fire Department personnel also responded to the incident. Michigan State Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal collision.

PEDESTRIAN ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION

Investigators will need to establish how the initial collision, the disabled vehicle, and the subsequent pedestrian impact contributed to the fatal incident. Relevant evidence may include vehicle damage, roadway conditions, lighting, witness statements, and the positions of the vehicles involved.

Candice Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal and a national legal analyst, has highlighted the importance of a thorough, independent investigation in pedestrian collision cases. In cases such as this, reviewing physical evidence and reconstructing the sequence of events can help clarify whether any driver’s actions or other contributing factors played a role.

A qualified accident reconstruction specialist may also be able to assess vehicle movements, visibility, stopping distances, and the circumstances surrounding the impact. These findings can help establish a clearer account of the incident and identify any potential negligence, if supported by the evidence.

The investigation’s findings will be important in determining the events leading to Hussein’s death. No conclusion about fault should be drawn before authorities complete their review.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Depending on the investigation’s findings and applicable Michigan law, Hussein’s eligible family members may have grounds to explore a wrongful death claim if another party’s negligence contributed to his death.

Stefano Formica, Of Counsel at Bond Legal and a national legal analyst, has discussed the importance of protecting families’ legal rights after fatal collisions. In cases such as this, a wrongful death attorney may help eligible relatives understand potential compensation, insurance procedures, and the evidence needed to evaluate a civil claim.

Potentially recoverable damages may include qualifying financial losses, funeral and burial expenses, and other damages permitted under applicable law. Eligibility and the amount of any recovery depend on the specific facts, the evidence of liability, and Michigan’s legal requirements.

Legal representation can also help families assess settlement proposals and communicate with insurers while the investigation proceeds. Any civil claim would be separate from the police investigation, and the available facts do not establish that a claim has been filed in this case.
