Hazel Krauss killed in Gainesville pedestrian crash, police report

GAINESVILLE, FL — October 24, 2026 A 19-year-old University of Florida student died after being struck by a vehicle while crossing West University Avenue in Gainesville late Saturday night, according to the Gainesville Police Department.

Authorities identified the pedestrian as Hazel Krauss, a freshman enrolled in the university’s Warrington College of Business. The collision occurred near the 2300 block of West University Avenue at approximately 11:33 p.m.

According to preliminary reports, an eastbound motorist swerved to avoid another vehicle and struck Krauss. Emergency assistance was provided at the scene before she was transported to UF Health Shands Hospital, where she later died from her injuries.

Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal collision. Further details about the incident may become available as the investigation progresses.

Incident Location

PEDESTRIAN ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION

Investigators will examine the events leading up to the collision, including the movements of both vehicles, the pedestrian’s position on the roadway, visibility, lighting and surrounding traffic conditions. Witness accounts and other available evidence may help authorities determine how the crash occurred.

National legal analyst Candice Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal, has emphasized the importance of carefully examining pedestrian collisions to identify potential negligence. In cases such as this, determining whether a driver acted reasonably and responded appropriately to surrounding traffic conditions can be essential to understanding liability.

A thorough investigation may also consider vehicle positioning, driver awareness and whether the available evidence supports a failure to exercise reasonable care. Responsibility cannot be established conclusively until the relevant facts have been evaluated.

The Governors Highway Safety Association estimated that 7,148 pedestrians died in U.S. traffic crashes in 2024, including an estimated 713 fatalities in Florida, highlighting the continuing risks faced by pedestrians on American roads.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Depending on the findings of the investigation, Hazel Krauss’s eligible surviving family members may have grounds to explore a wrongful death claim if another party’s negligence contributed to the fatal collision. Any potential claim would depend on the evidence, applicable Florida law and the circumstances established during the investigation.

National legal analyst Stefano Formica, Of Counsel at Bond Legal, has discussed how wrongful death cases may involve financial losses and the personal impact of losing a family member. In cases such as this, potentially recoverable damages may include funeral expenses, lost financial support, loss of companionship and other legally recognized losses, depending on the claimant’s eligibility and the facts of the case.

A civil claim is separate from any criminal investigation and does not depend entirely on whether criminal charges are filed. Reviewing the available evidence and applicable insurance coverage can help eligible family members understand their legal options.

Accident Injury News will continue to follow developments as authorities release additional information about the fatal pedestrian collision.
