DURHAM, NC — October 25, 2026 Five people were taken to the hospital following a multi-vehicle collision near the intersection of N.C. 55 and Cecil Street in Durham, according to reports citing the Durham Police Department. The crash involved a sport utility vehicle, other vehicles and a 16-year-old girl riding a scooter.
Authorities identified the driver as John Michael Carroll, 47, of Durham. Police reportedly cited him for driving while impaired and driving while his license was revoked following an earlier impaired-driving-related revocation.
According to the preliminary investigation described by WRAL, Carroll was driving a white Ford Escape north on N.C. 55 when the vehicle crossed the double center line and struck another vehicle. Investigators said the Ford subsequently lost control, struck the teenage scooter rider and collided with another vehicle in the southbound lane before stopping.
However, a separate report from CBS 17 described the sequence of impacts differently. The precise circumstances surrounding the collision therefore remain subject to clarification by authorities.
All five injured individuals, including the teenager, were reportedly transported to the hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, according to updated reporting.
The charges against Carroll are allegations, and he is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
