Dayton Bus Driver Ricky Eugene Cherry Arrested After Crash

DAYTON, TX — October 16, 2026 A school bus driver was arrested after a hit-and-run collision left a junior high school student seriously injured near U.S. Highway 90 in Dayton, Texas, according to local authorities. Police identified the driver as 70-year-old Ricky Eugene Cherry, a Dayton resident and Dayton Independent School District employee.

The crash occurred near the eastbound intersection of U.S. Highway 90 and Stilson Road between approximately 6:15 and 6:30 a.m. on Friday, October 16, 2026.

Investigators said a vehicle struck a juvenile and left the scene without stopping to provide assistance. Police subsequently announced Cherry’s arrest in connection with the incident.

The injured child attends Woodrow Wilson Junior High School, according to the school district. Officials have limited the information released about the student to protect the family’s privacy.

The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to establish the circumstances surrounding the collision.

HIT-AND-RUN CRASH INVESTIGATION

Dayton police responded to reports of the collision near U.S. Highway 90 and Stilson Road during the early morning hours of October 16. Investigators sought information about the vehicle involved and the driver’s alleged failure to remain at the scene.

Authorities later identified Cherry as the person arrested in connection with the incident. Public reporting indicates that investigators examined available camera footage as part of their inquiry.

Dayton ISD confirmed that the injured juvenile is a student at Woodrow Wilson Junior High School. The district said it was cooperating with law enforcement and had notified the student’s parents.

Officials have asked anyone who witnessed the crash or possesses relevant dashcam or security-camera footage to contact the Dayton Police Department.

PERSONAL INJURY CLAIM

A collision involving a school bus and a juvenile can raise questions about driver responsibility, the circumstances of the impact, and the extent of the injuries. Any potential civil claim would depend on the evidence, applicable Texas law, and the facts established through the investigation.

In cases such as this, relevant evidence may include police reports, available video recordings, witness statements, medical documentation, and records identifying the vehicle and its operator. These materials can help clarify how the collision occurred and whether a party may bear legal responsibility.

The student’s family may wish to obtain qualified legal advice about any available options after the facts and circumstances are established. No conclusion about civil liability should be drawn solely from an arrest, and any claim would need to be assessed on its own evidence.
