David Mason killed in Bartonville crash, according to police

BARTONVILLE, IL — October 2, 2026 A 70-year-old Bartonville man, David Mason, died Friday evening after a head-on collision in Peoria County, authorities said.

The crash occurred at approximately 5:55 p.m. in the 1000 block of West Garfield Avenue near North Lafayette Avenue in Bartonville. Mason was one of the drivers involved in the collision.

Authorities have not released further details about what led to the crash. The circumstances surrounding the collision, including whether speed, impairment, distraction or another factor played a role, remain under investigation.

FATAL HEAD-ON ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION

Bartonville Police and the Illinois State Police are investigating the fatal collision on West Garfield Avenue. Investigators are expected to determine how the vehicles collided and whether any contributing factors led to the head-on impact.

Head-on crashes can result from a range of circumstances, including driver error, impaired driving, excessive speed, distracted driving, unfamiliarity with an area or roadway conditions. According to AAA data cited in the original report, more than 2,000 people were killed in head-on collisions on divided highways between 2015 and 2018.

National legal analyst Candice Bond has emphasized that an independent investigation can be important in cases such as this, particularly when the official circumstances of a fatal crash have not yet been fully established.

In cases involving a fatal collision, an attorney conducting an independent review may examine available evidence such as photographs from the scene, vehicle damage, witness accounts, surveillance footage and relevant phone or electronic records. Those sources can sometimes help establish the sequence of events and determine whether another driver’s conduct contributed to the crash.

Bond has also noted that preserving evidence promptly can be important because physical evidence, video footage and witness recollections may become more difficult to obtain or evaluate as time passes. These considerations are particularly relevant when investigators are still working to determine exactly how a fatal collision occurred.

At this stage, authorities have not publicly identified a cause for the Bartonville crash, and no additional circumstances surrounding Mason’s death have been released.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Depending on the outcome of the investigation, Mason’s surviving family members may have grounds to pursue a wrongful-death claim if another party is found legally responsible for the collision.

Wrongful-death cases can involve damages associated with the loss of a family member, potentially including funeral and burial expenses, loss of companionship and other losses recognized under applicable state law. Whether such a claim exists depends on the facts established through the investigation and the applicable Illinois law.

National legal analyst Stefano Formica has stressed that families dealing with a sudden fatal accident may face significant emotional and practical challenges. In cases such as this, he has indicated that obtaining legal guidance can help a family understand the investigation and protect its legal interests while authorities determine what happened.

A wrongful-death attorney may monitor the official investigation, review available evidence and assess whether the facts support a claim against a potentially responsible party. Any potential recovery would depend on the evidence, applicable law and circumstances established in the case.
