David Burford killed in Austintown hit-and-run, police say

AUSTINTOWN, OH — October 19, 2026 David Burford, 45, of Austintown, died after being struck by a vehicle while walking along Burkey Road in a hit-and-run collision, according to the Austintown Police Department.

Police reported that the vehicle involved in the crash left the scene. Burford was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center with critical injuries but later died.

Before the fatal collision, a gray vehicle reportedly left the roadway near the 4200 block of Burkey Road, struck a mailbox and left tire marks and a piece of vehicle debris in the grass. A witness following the vehicle told police that the driver had run a red light, swerved and struck a curb before the witness fell back because of the vehicle’s erratic movements.

The collision occurred at approximately 9 p.m. Surveillance footage reviewed by investigators reportedly showed the vehicle striking Burford, slowing down and then leaving the scene.

Police subsequently located the vehicle and identified a person of interest believed to have been driving it. The vehicle was seized for laboratory examination. Authorities had not announced any charges or released the person’s identity at the time of the report.

FATAL ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION

The Austintown Police Department continues to investigate the fatal hit-and-run. Investigators are examining the recovered vehicle and available surveillance footage, alongside physical evidence collected from the roadway and witness statements, to establish the circumstances surrounding the collision.

Determining how the crash occurred and identifying the driver’s actions before and after impact will be important parts of the investigation. Officials have not announced charges, and the person identified as a person of interest has not been publicly named.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

In cases such as this, a wrongful death claim may be an option for eligible surviving family members, depending on the findings of the investigation and the applicable law. Such claims may seek compensation for losses associated with a fatal collision, including loss of financial support, companionship and other legally recoverable damages.

National legal analyst Candice Bond has emphasized the importance of an independent investigation in hit-and-run cases. Evidence such as vehicle damage, road conditions, lighting, surveillance recordings and witness accounts can help clarify how a collision occurred and whether negligence contributed to the death.

National legal analyst Stefano Formica has also highlighted the importance of protecting a bereaved family’s legal interests following a fatal accident. In cases such as this, an attorney can explain potential legal options, monitor developments in the official investigation and help eligible family members understand the damages they may be entitled to pursue.

Any potential claim would depend on the evidence, the applicable law and the circumstances established through the investigation. No civil liability or criminal guilt should be presumed before the relevant facts are established.
