Curtis William Gammond Killed in Highway 204 Truck Accident

UNION, OR — October 26, 2026 Curtis William Gammond, a 54-year-old Pendleton resident, died Monday morning in a collision involving two log trucks on Highway 204 in Union County, according to Oregon State Police.

Authorities reported that Gammond was driving a fully loaded Kenworth log truck eastbound at approximately 5:54 a.m. when an unloaded Kenworth log truck traveling westbound entered his lane and struck his vehicle.

Investigators said the driver of the unloaded truck, a 55-year-old man, swerved into the opposing lane while attempting to avoid a deer on the roadway.

Gammond suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The circumstances surrounding the collision remain under investigation.

FATAL CRASH INVESTIGATION

Oregon State Police are investigating the circumstances that led to the fatal collision on Highway 204. Investigators will examine the events preceding the crash, including the driver’s evasive maneuver, roadway conditions, vehicle positions and other evidence that could help establish how the two trucks collided.

Animal encounters can create sudden hazards for motorists, particularly when a driver reacts abruptly to avoid an animal. According to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, animal-related collisions accounted for approximately 353,800 police-reported crashes, 49,725 injuries and 277 deaths annually in the United States between 2020 and 2024.

Candice Bond, an experienced auto accident attorney and Managing Partner at Bond Legal, has highlighted the importance of conducting a thorough, independent investigation following serious collisions.

In cases such as this, a detailed review of the available evidence can help establish the sequence of events and determine whether any factors beyond the reported attempt to avoid a deer contributed to the crash. Relevant evidence may include witness statements, photographs, roadway markings, vehicle damage and available electronic records.

An independent investigation may also help preserve evidence and clarify potential liability. Investigators can examine whether the vehicles were operating safely under the circumstances and whether any additional factors contributed to the collision.

The findings of the official investigation will be important in determining the circumstances surrounding Gammond’s death.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Following a fatal collision, eligible surviving family members may have grounds to pursue a wrongful death claim, depending on the investigation’s findings and applicable Oregon law.

Stefano Formica, Of Counsel at Bond Legal, has emphasized the importance of protecting the legal rights of families who lose loved ones in serious accidents. Such losses can bring significant emotional distress as well as unexpected financial obligations.

In cases such as this, a wrongful death claim may allow eligible relatives to seek compensation for legally recoverable losses, which can include funeral and burial expenses, loss of financial support, loss of companionship and other damages recognized under state law.

The availability and extent of any compensation would depend on the evidence, the circumstances of the collision and the applicable legal requirements.

Families dealing with a fatal truck accident may benefit from obtaining the official crash report and preserving relevant documentation. Legal guidance can also help eligible relatives understand their rights, applicable deadlines and potential avenues for compensation.
