Carl Colangelo Killed in Crash on FM 969 in Bastrop

BASTROP, TX — October 6, 2026 Carl Colangelo, 66, of New Bedford, Massachusetts, died following a head-on collision involving multiple vehicles at the intersection of Farm-to-Market Road 969 and Blakey Drive in Bastrop, Texas.

According to police, the collision occurred at approximately 6 a.m. when a juvenile driving a Dodge Ram pickup reportedly swerved to avoid a bicyclist who had stopped on the improved roadside shoulder to adjust his bicycle chain. The pickup then struck a northbound Nissan Rogue driven by Colangelo.

A Subaru subsequently collided with the Dodge Ram, adding to the severity of the incident. Colangelo sustained fatal injuries, while the Subaru’s driver and a passenger in the Nissan Rogue were also hurt.

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision. Further details about the injured individuals and the factors that led to the crash have not been fully established in the available report.

Incident Location

CRASH INVESTIGATION NEEDED

Investigators are working to establish how the collision unfolded and whether any actions or external factors contributed to the fatal outcome. The sequence of events, including the pickup driver’s maneuver to avoid the bicyclist and the subsequent impacts, will be important in determining the circumstances of the crash.

A comprehensive investigation may involve examining vehicle damage, roadway evidence, witness accounts, and any available surveillance or other relevant records. Accident reconstruction specialists may also help establish vehicle movements and the timing of the collisions.

Candice Bond, a national legal analyst and managing partner at Bond Legal, has highlighted the importance of obtaining independent evidence and carefully evaluating the circumstances of serious roadway collisions. In cases such as this, a thorough review can help clarify potential liability and provide affected families with a better understanding of what happened.

The investigation’s findings may help authorities determine whether negligence or other contributing factors played a role. No conclusions about fault should be drawn before the relevant evidence has been reviewed.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Following a fatal motor vehicle collision, eligible surviving family members may have grounds to pursue a wrongful death claim if evidence establishes that another party’s negligence contributed to the loss. Potentially responsible parties and the availability of compensation depend on the specific facts and applicable Texas law.

A wrongful death claim may seek damages for losses such as the loss of companionship, emotional suffering, and certain financial support associated with the death. Depending on the circumstances, other legally recognized claims may also be available to eligible family members.

Stefano Formica, of counsel at Bond Legal and a national legal analyst, has discussed the emotional and financial consequences that families can face after losing a loved one. In cases such as this, understanding the available legal options, preserving relevant evidence, and reviewing insurance coverage may help families make informed decisions during a difficult period.

Legal professionals may assist eligible relatives in reviewing investigative findings, evaluating potential claims, and communicating with insurers. Any determination of liability or compensation would depend on the evidence, the parties involved, and the applicable law.
