Bellmont man Ryan Haught killed in Mount Carmel e-bike crash

MOUNT CARMEL, IL — October 9, 2026 Ryan Haught, a 26-year-old resident of Bellmont, Illinois, died Friday evening after the electric bicycle he was riding collided with a red Jeep near Mount Carmel, according to Illinois State Police.

The collision occurred shortly after 7 p.m. at the intersection of Illinois Route 1 and County Road 1120 North. State police reported that the Jeep and the electric bicycle were approaching the intersection when they crashed.

Haught was pronounced dead at the scene by the Wabash County Coroner’s Office. The Jeep’s driver was not injured, authorities reported.

An autopsy was scheduled for Monday to help determine the circumstances surrounding Haught’s death.

Emergency responders included personnel from the Wabash County Sheriff’s Department, Mount Carmel Fire Department, local emergency medical services and the Wabash County Emergency Management Agency.

Authorities have not released additional details about what led to the collision. The investigation remains ongoing.

E-BICYCLE CRASH INVESTIGATION

Investigators are working to establish the circumstances that led to the fatal collision involving Haught and the Jeep. Relevant evidence may include vehicle positions, roadway conditions, visibility, witness statements and any available physical or electronic records that help reconstruct the incident.

Electric bicycles have become increasingly common on American roads, raising concerns about rider safety when these vehicles share intersections and roadways with passenger vehicles. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission reported that emergency department visits involving e-bike-related injuries increased from approximately 3,500 in 2017 to more than 34,000 in 2023.

Candice Bond, a managing partner at Bond Legal and a national legal analyst, has emphasized the importance of promptly investigating bicycle collisions. In cases such as this, a thorough review can help clarify how the crash occurred and whether any driver actions, roadway conditions or other factors contributed to the outcome.

An independent investigation may involve reviewing the official police report, interviewing witnesses, examining physical evidence and consulting qualified accident reconstruction experts. Investigators may also examine applicable insurance policies and other records relevant to determining potential responsibility.

These steps can help establish a more complete account of the collision rather than relying solely on preliminary information. The cause of Haught’s crash and any potential negligence have not been established in the available reports.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Depending on the findings of the investigation, Haught’s eligible family members may have grounds to explore a wrongful death claim if evidence establishes that another party’s wrongful conduct or negligence contributed to his death. The availability of a claim and any potential recovery would depend on the facts, applicable Illinois law and the evidence presented.

Stefano Formica, of counsel at Bond Legal and a national legal analyst, has discussed the importance of protecting families’ rights following fatal accidents. In cases such as this, families may need assistance understanding the legal process, communicating with insurers and determining whether a civil claim is appropriate.

Depending on the circumstances and applicable law, recoverable damages in a wrongful death action may include certain financial losses, funeral expenses and the loss of support or companionship. A separate claim may also be available for qualifying losses associated with the deceased person’s injuries before death.

A careful review of the available evidence is important before drawing conclusions about liability or the potential value of a claim. Any civil action would need to be assessed on its individual merits.

Accident Injury News will continue to follow developments as additional information about the Mount Carmel collision becomes available.
