Anheli V. Trinidad killed in Staten Island intersection crash, NYPD say

STATEN ISLAND, NY (January 2, 2026) – Two people were killed and several others injured Friday morning in a two-vehicle crash at a Staten Island intersection, according to the New York Police Department.

Police said an Audi SUV was traveling west on Rockland Avenue in the New Springville neighborhood and attempting a left turn onto Forest Hill Road when it collided with a Honda SUV traveling south on Forest Hill Road toward Richmond Hill Road. The crash occurred at about 9:57 a.m.

Anheli Vasquez-Trinidad, 6, of Park Hill Avenue in Clifton, was a rear-seat passenger in the Honda. She was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Gerardo Avila, 90, of Tompkins Street in Stapleton, was a front-seat passenger in the Honda and also died from injuries sustained in the crash.

The driver of the Honda, a 70-year-old woman, was reported to be in critical condition. The Audi driver, a 50-year-old man, was reported to be in stable condition.

Police said a fifth person left the scene before being evaluated by emergency medical services. The investigation remains ongoing.

CRASH INVESTIGATION

Motor vehicle crashes remain a significant safety concern nationwide. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 42,514 people were killed in 5,930,496 reported motor vehicle crashes across the United States in 2022.

“Investigators review multiple factors when analyzing serious collisions, including road conditions, visibility, and lighting,” said Candice Bond, a Managing Partner with Bond Legal.

Bond noted that accident reconstruction specialists may be brought in to help determine how a crash occurred. “These investigative resources are essential when assisting clients who are seeking compensation for injuries, damages, or the loss of a loved one,” she said. Accident Injury News reports that thorough investigations are critical in fatal crash cases.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

As the investigation continues, the family of Anheli Vasquez-Trinidad may have the option to pursue a wrongful death claim. Families affected by fatal accidents may seek damages for loss of companionship, emotional distress, and pain and suffering.

“The grief and emotional burden following the sudden loss of a loved one can be overwhelming,” said Stefano Formica, of counsel with Bond Legal.

Formica said it is crucial for families to have their rights protected during this difficult time. “A wrongful death attorney can stay informed on the investigation and work to ensure that a family’s legal rights and best interests are fully protected,” he said.
