Jamil Wilson killed in White Plains I-287 crash, state police say

WHITE PLAINS, NY — October 19, 2026 Jamil B. Wilson, a 47-year-old New York State Thruway Authority maintenance worker, died after a vehicle struck him while he was carrying out roadside mowing duties on Interstate 287 in White Plains, Westchester County, according to New York State Police.

The collision occurred on the westbound Cross Westchester Expressway near mile marker 3.9 and the Exit 6 off-ramp for Broadway (Route 22), at approximately 2:17 p.m. on Monday, October 19.

Investigators reported that a 2026 Nissan initially left its travel lane and moved onto the highway shoulder before returning to the roadway and colliding with the rear of a 2025 Mazda. The Nissan subsequently left the road again and struck Wilson, who was operating a mowing tractor on the grassy roadside.

Emergency responders transported Wilson to Westchester Medical Center, where he later died. The Nissan’s driver sustained minor injuries, while the Mazda’s driver and a passenger also received hospital treatment for injuries that were not considered life-threatening, police said.

Wilson was a White Plains resident who had worked for the Thruway Authority for nearly six years. Other members of the maintenance crew were not injured in the incident, according to agency officials.

CRASH INVESTIGATION

New York State Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal collision. The inquiry involves personnel from the Troop K Bureau of Criminal Investigation and the Troop K Collision Reconstruction Unit.

Investigators have outlined the sequence of events involving the Nissan, Mazda and roadside maintenance worker. However, the available public information does not establish why the Nissan left the roadway or whether any traffic violations or criminal charges will follow.

The investigation is ongoing, and further findings from authorities may clarify the factors that contributed to the crash.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

In cases such as this, a review of the collision may consider driver conduct, vehicle movements, roadway conditions, visibility, and the safety measures in place around roadside maintenance operations. The evidence may help determine whether negligence contributed to the incident and whether any parties could bear legal responsibility.

National legal analysts, including Candice Bond and Stefano Formica, have discussed the importance of investigating liability and preserving evidence in serious motor vehicle cases. Their general areas of legal analysis can provide context for understanding how crash claims are evaluated; however, no case-specific statement or conclusion from either analyst has been verified for this incident.

Depending on the findings and applicable law, potential legal issues may include a wrongful-death claim brought by eligible surviving family members, as well as employment-related benefits that may apply when a worker dies in the course of performing job duties. The availability and scope of any claim would depend on the evidence, the relevant legal requirements, and the circumstances of Wilson’s employment.
