Yazan Aljayousi injured in Richland Township wrong-way accident

RICHLAND TOWNSHIP – The Ohio State Highway Patrol responded to a multi-vehicle crash on I-75 near Beaverdam on July 1 at approximately 3:02 p.m.

An 82-year-old North Carolina man drove his 2021 Chevrolet Silverado south in the northbound lanes. The wrong-way driver struck a 2022 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van head-on.

Yazan Aljayousi, 22, of Dearborn, Michigan, drove the Mercedes-Benz van. He suffered life-threatening injuries in the collision. Bluffton EMS transported Aljayousi to Mercy Health St. Rita’s Hospital in Lima, Ohio.

The 82-year-old Lincolnton man was not wearing a safety belt and died at the scene. The Allen County Coroner’s Office removed his body from the crash site.

A 53-year-old Bay City, Michigan man drove a tractor-trailer that struck crash debris. The tractor-trailer also hit a 2017 Acura driven by a 40-year-old Tipp City, Ohio man.

The Acura went off the roadway and overturned. The driver suffered minor injuries and received treatment at the scene. A 59-year-old Rockwood, Michigan man drove a Honda that also struck debris but was not injured.

Ohio State Highway Patrol continues its investigation.

CRASH INVESTIGATION

Wrong-way driving represents a significant safety hazard on American roadways, with approximately 3.7% of fatal crashes on divided highways attributed to wrong-way driving.

While different agencies report varying figures, the scope of the problem is consistently alarming. According to the Federal Highway Administration, about 500 people die each year in the United States in wrong-way crashes, while a study conducted by the National Transportation Safety Board estimates that an average of 350 people die every year because of a wrong way driving accident in the U.S.

These statistics highlight the deadly nature of wrong-way incidents, which typically involve head-on collisions and result in severe or fatal injuries for those involved.

“Road conditions, visibility, and lighting are all possible contributing factors that are considered and require thorough examination,” said Candice Bond, a Managing Partner with Bond Legal.

“An accident reconstruction team is sometimes needed to help piece together what happened. All of these resources are necessary for helping clients receive monetary compensation for damages or a loss following a collision,” said Bond.

PERSONAL INJURY CLAIM

Yazan Aljayousi may have the right to pursue a personal injury claim pending an investigation.

Bond said, “Injured victims involved in a collision often seek a personal injury claim to cover the cost of medical bills, future medical care, loss of income, emotional trauma, and pain and suffering.

“Insurance companies can be notoriously unconcerned with the mounting costs that an injured party may accrue. An attorney can help. We protect the victims of these tragedies daily, forcing the insurance companies to pay for their mistakes,” she added.
