Winona Kuykendall tragically killed in Bentonville tractor-trailer accident

BENTONVILLE, Ark. — An 84-year-old woman died from injuries sustained in a two-vehicle collision last week.

Winona Kuykendall of Bentonville was driving a 2009 Kia Optima westbound on 14th Street around 3:52 p.m. on June 17. Her vehicle was struck by a 1988 Peterbilt tractor-trailer traveling north on Walton Boulevard.

Paramedics transported Kuykendall to Mercy Hospital following the accident. She later succumbed to injuries.

The driver of the Peterbilt was not identified in the crash report.

The Arkansas Department of Public Safety is investigating the incident and has not provided any additional information.

CRASH INVESTIGATION

Arkansas recorded over 2,500 tractor-trailer crashes in 2023, with more than 100 of those resulting in fatalities—most involving occupants of smaller vehicles. The majority of incidents took place on interstates and U.S. highways, often linked to driver fatigue, excessive speed, or improper lane maneuvers, according to the Arkansas Department of Public Safety.

Rear-end impacts and crashes involving disabled vehicles on the shoulder were frequent, particularly in rural areas. Counties such as Craighead, Pulaski, and Washington reported some of the highest numbers of truck-related accidents.

Candice Bond, an experienced tractor-trailer accident attorney, said that in such cases, it is imperative to have an independent investigation conducted promptly to protect the rights of a victim.

“Tractor-trailer crashes are often complex, and many factors can play a role in these types of accidents,” said Bond, who is a Managing Partner of Bond Legal.

“A skilled attorney can protect victims from trucking companies, which often send their own investigators to crash sites and possess a variety of resources they can utilize to defend a negligent truck driver.

“Your lawyer can advocate for you by hiring expert witnesses, conducting driver background checks, locating witnesses to the crash, and reviewing applicable insurance coverage, while carefully guiding a victim through the legal process.”

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

The family of Winona Kuykendall may pursue compensation for damages such as costs associated with the death, loss of income and companionship, and other hardships.

“A death to a family member after an accident is both tragic and devastating to a surviving family. The grief, shock, and anger can be overwhelming,” said Bond.

She added, “Aside from the emotional suffering of those left behind, the death of someone close can have devastating financial implications. Loss of income and funeral costs alone can have tragic consequences when a family member is lost.”
