Vernon Loechel involved in Belton crash injuring truck driver

BELTON, TX, (May 13, 2026) – One person was injured Wednesday in a two-vehicle crash involving an Audi driven by Vernon Richard Loechel, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Authorities said the collision occurred on Farm-to-Market Road 439 when Loechel was traveling westbound and crossed into the eastbound lanes, striking a garbage truck. The force of the impact caused the truck to veer across the roadway and crash into a nearby convenience store.

The driver of the garbage truck was transported to Baylor Scott & White Hospital for treatment of injuries. Officials have not released the victim’s identity.

Loechel was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.

The Texas Department of Public Safety continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision.

CRASH INVESTIGATION NEEDED

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), vehicles often cross center lines due to factors such as distracted driving, fatigue, speeding, driver error, and impairment.

Lane departure crashes account for a significant percentage of serious injuries and fatalities. Over a three-year period, roadway departures resulted in 19,158 deaths nationwide.

Candice Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal and a national analyst with Accident Injury News, emphasized the importance of an independent investigation in cases like this to preserve critical evidence for injured victims.

“In addition to an official police report, an attorney will carefully evaluate all contributing factors in a crash,” Bond said. “Attorneys can retain expert witnesses, conduct background investigations on drivers, identify and interview witnesses, and review applicable insurance coverage. Legal counsel helps guide victims through the aftermath while ensuring their rights are protected.”

PERSONAL INJURY CLAIM

The victim injured in this crash may have the right to pursue a personal injury claim. Stefano Formica, Of Counsel with Bond Legal, explained that the physical, emotional, and financial impact of serious injuries can be extensive and long-lasting.

“Although no amount of compensation can undo a serious injury, it is important that victims understand their legal rights,” Formica said. “The injured individual in this crash may be entitled to pursue damages including medical expenses, future treatment costs, pain and suffering, and emotional distress.”
