UNION COUNTY, Ark. — A collision at the intersection of State Highway 7 and Pershing Highway claimed the life of an 81-year-old Smackover man Tuesday morning.
The elderly driver died when his 2007 Pontiac was struck by a 2005 Chevrolet driven by Tristen Dewayne Peebles, 22, of Camden. The accident occurred at 10:55 a.m. under clear skies and dry road conditions.
The 81-year-old man was traveling southbound on Highway 7 with a 39-year-old Ward resident as his passenger. The driver pulled his Pontiac onto the shoulder at the Pershing Highway intersection before attempting a left turn across the southbound lane.
Peebles’ Chevrolet, also traveling south on Highway 7, struck the left side of the victim’s vehicle during the turn. Emergency personnel pronounced the Smackover man dead at the scene.
Both Peebles and the 39-year-old passenger sustained injuries in the crash. Medical personnel transported both men to area hospitals for treatment. The extent of their injuries was not immediately available.
The intersection where the accident occurred serves as a junction between State Highway 7 and Pershing Highway in rural Union County.
