Steve Spenle Killed During Lansing Pothole Repair Operation

LANSING, MI, (May 26, 2026) – Steve Spenle, 49, of Mason, tragically lost his life Tuesday afternoon in a work-zone collision along northbound U.S. 127 in Ingham County, according to the Ingham County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies responded shortly after 1 p.m. to the area south of Holt Road, where a vehicle reportedly entered an active pothole-patching operation and struck road-repair workers near Lansing.

Authorities said Spenle and another 51-year-old Mason resident were both pronounced dead at the scene as a result of injuries sustained in the crash.

The driver, identified as a 24-year-old man from DeWitt, suffered critical injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

Investigators stated that speeding appears to have been a contributing factor in the deadly collision. The Ingham Regional Crash Investigation Team continues to investigate the incident.

PEDESTRIAN ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION

Michigan recorded 183 pedestrian deaths in 2023, representing a 6% increase from the 173 fatalities reported in 2022, according to Michigan State Police. Authorities also documented 2,114 pedestrian-involved crashes in 2023, compared with 1,897 the year before, marking an 11% rise and the highest pedestrian death total in a decade.

The Governors Highway Safety Association reports that the growing number of SUVs and pickup trucks on roadways may be contributing to the increase because these larger vehicles can make it more difficult for drivers to see pedestrians. Officials noted that pedestrian fatalities nationwide have climbed nearly 60% since 2013.

“Road conditions, visibility, and lighting are all possible contributing factors considered and examined,” said Candice Bond, a Managing Partner with Bond Legal.

“An accident reconstruction team is sometimes needed to help piece together what happened. All of these resources are necessary for helping clients receive monetary compensation for damages or a loss following a collision,” added Bond, an experienced pedestrian attorney.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

“It is almost always a driver’s responsibility to yield to pedestrians,” said Stefano Formica, of counsel at Bond Legal. The family of a victim may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim.

“Family members of wrongful death victims may seek compensation for loss of income and companionship, funeral expenses, pain and suffering, and emotional distress following a tragic or catastrophic accident,” said Formica.

Serving as an advocate, an attorney can compassionately guide a family through this difficult time while helping protect their legal rights.

“Insurance companies often attempt to pressure victims into accepting quick settlements for far less than a claim may actually be worth,” Formica noted. “However, an attorney will vigorously advocate for clients to help ensure they are treated fairly and properly compensated.”
