MONROE COUNTY, Mich. — A multi-vehicle crash involving two tractor-trailers and an RV critically injured a man Friday night on a freeway near Monroe County.
Shaine Smith and his wife were traveling from Florida to Michigan for Father’s Day in their RV motorhome. Two tractor-trailers collided directly in front of their vehicle on the freeway. The RV was unable to stop in time and became part of the crash.
Smith’s wife sustained minor injuries and escaped the wreckage, while Smith became pinned to the RV steering wheel. Emergency crews worked for up to two hours to extricate Smith from the damaged motorhome. Responders transported him to a hospital where he required two blood transfusions.
Medical teams then transferred Smith to a second hospital in an attempt to save his leg. He also suffered minor fractures to his hip and sternum during the accident.
The conditions of the tractor-trailer drivers were not immediately available. Details about what caused the initial collision between the tractor-trailers remain under investigation.
A fundraiser was established to help with Smith’s medical expenses and replace belongings lost in the crash.
