PORTLAND, Ore. — Portland police are searching for the suspect of a hit-and-run crash that injured two recent high school graduates at a dangerous Southeast Portland intersection.
The collision occurred around 12:30 a.m. Sunday when Ruby Kastrava and Bayla Zwerling, both 18, were crossing S.E. 122nd Avenue at S.E. Market Street. Both girls had just finished their senior year at Tigard High School.
A dark SUV ran a red light and hit the teens while they were legally accessing the crosswalk. The vehicle also collided with another car before the driver fled from the scene.
The intersection is known as a high-crash corridor according to the Portland Bureau of Transportation.
Kastrava suffered a broken femur and required five days of hospitalization. She now walks on crutches and has multiple bruises and scrapes.
Police interviewed witnesses and reviewed surveillance footage but have been unable to identify the suspect vehicle beyond its dark color. Investigators are treating the case as a serious crime.
Anyone with information about the hit-and-run is urged to contact Portland police.
