Robert Earl Scott, Passenger Die in Bessemer Amtrak Collision, AL

BESSEMER, AL, (June 30, 2026) – Two people died Tuesday evening after the car they were traveling in was struck by an Amtrak train in Bessemer.

According to police, 69-year-old Robert Earl Scott was allegedly behind the wheel when the crash occurred at approximately 5:29 p.m. near the intersection of 32nd Street and Carolina Avenue. Both Scott and his passenger, whose identity has not been released, were pronounced dead at the scene.

Responding officers found that the railroad crossing arms were down and the signal lights were actively flashing at the time of the crash.

The circumstances surrounding the collision remain under investigation.

CRASH INVESTIGATION NEEDED

Data from the Federal Railroad Administration shows that railroad-related incidents across the United States result in approximately 950 deaths and over 6,500 injuries annually.

These statistics encompass fatalities and injuries affecting pedestrians, trespassers, railroad workers, passengers, and those involved in highway-rail grade-crossing collisions.

Candice Bond, a skilled train accident attorney, noted that investigators will closely examine these contributing factors and emphasized the value of a separate, independent legal review. “Train accidents tend to be highly complex, with numerous factors potentially contributing to how they unfold,” said Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal and national analyst with Accident Injury News. “An experienced attorney can shield a victim’s family from railroad companies, which frequently deploy their own investigators to crash sites and have substantial resources at their disposal to defend against negligence claims. Your attorney will fight on your behalf by bringing in expert witnesses, tracking down crash witnesses, and examining relevant insurance coverage — all while guiding you carefully through the legal process and fiercely protecting your interests.”

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

The family of the passenger who died in this accident may have grounds to pursue a wrongful death claim. Relatives of wrongful death victims may be able to seek damages for loss of companionship, pain, suffering, and emotional distress following such a tragic and catastrophic accident.

“We know firsthand what families endure during times like these, and protecting their rights is critical,” said Stefano Formica, Of Counsel with Bond Legal. “A wrongful death attorney stays closely engaged with the ongoing official investigation to help make sure the family’s best interests are looked after. Relatives of wrongful death victims have the right to pursue damages for loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional distress in the aftermath of a tragic or catastrophic accident.”
