DEKALB, AL, (April 29, 2026) – A 47-year-old Jacksonville man was injured Wednesday evening in a three-vehicle crash on Interstate 59 in DeKalb County that also left one driver dead, according to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA).
Authorities identified the injured driver as Richard W. Bivins.
Troopers said the crash occurred around 5:20 p.m. near milepost 140 close to the Alabama-Georgia state line. A 2003 Ford F-150 reportedly struck the rear of a 2023 Volvo tractor-trailer traveling on the interstate. After the initial impact, the pickup crossed into oncoming traffic and collided head-on with a 2020 Ford F-150.
Bivins, who was driving the 2020 Ford, sustained unspecified injuries and was transported along with a 53-year-old passenger from Verbena to Erlanger Hospital in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
The driver of the 2003 Ford, a 62-year-old man from Ider, was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The tractor-trailer driver, a 43-year-old man from Staten Island, New York, was not injured.
The investigation remains ongoing.
