Ramonita Colon Killed in Bronx Bus Stop Crash, NYPD Reports

CO-OP CITY, NY, (April 21, 2026) — A woman was killed and another person injured Tuesday afternoon after a vehicle crashed into a bus stop bench in Co-op City in the Bronx, according to the New York City Police Department (NYPD).

Authorities said the crash occurred around 1:30 p.m. on Bartow Avenue when a vehicle veered into a bus stop area and struck a bench where pedestrians were seated.

The victim, identified as 72-year-old Ramonita Colon, was struck and pronounced dead at the scene due to her injuries.

A 36-year-old man who was also seated on the bench was injured in the collision and transported to a hospital, where he was reported to be in stable condition.

NYPD officials confirmed that the investigation into the crash remains ongoing as they work to determine what caused the vehicle to leave the roadway.

FATAL PEDESTRIAN ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION

Pedestrians in densely populated urban areas such as New York City face elevated risks due to traffic congestion, driver distraction, and roadway design that often prioritizes vehicles over foot traffic.

In 2025, 111 pedestrians were killed in New York City. Contributing factors in pedestrian-related incidents commonly include speeding, driver error, distracted driving, and impairment.

Candice Bond, an experienced pedestrian accident attorney, said that in cases such as this, it is essential to conduct an independent investigation led by a qualified attorney to help protect the rights of the victim’s family.

“Having the proper resources is extremely important to investigate a pedestrian accident case and prove negligence,” said Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal and national analyst with Accident Injury News. “Road conditions, signage visibility, and roadway lighting are all potential contributing factors that must be carefully examined. These steps are necessary to ensure that families who have lost a loved one receive justice and fair compensation.”

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

The family members of Ramonita Colon may be entitled to pursue a wrongful death claim. Families of wrongful death victims may seek damages for loss of companionship, pain and suffering, emotional distress, and other losses following a tragic accident.

“We understand just what families are forced to go through, and having their rights protected is vital,” said Stefano Formica, Of Counsel with Bond Legal.

He added, “A wrongful death lawyer will stay updated on the official investigation and help ensure that the family’s best interests are protected. Relatives of wrongful death victims are entitled to seek compensation for the emotional and financial impact of such a devastating loss.”
