Pedestrian crash in Raleigh claims life of NC State professor

RALEIGH, N.C., Nov. 11 — Authorities are investigating a pedestrian collision Monday evening that resulted in the death of a North Carolina State University faculty member.

Raleigh police said the crash happened at about 6:11 p.m. near the intersection of Pogue Street and Clark Avenue. The victim, 41-year-old assistant professor Natalia Duque-Wilckens, suffered critical injuries after being struck and later died at a local hospital.

The driver involved, a 19-year-old from Waxhaw, remained at the scene and was not injured. He was issued a citation for misdemeanor death by vehicle.

PEDESTRIAN ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION

This tragic incident highlights the ongoing risks pedestrians face across the nation.

According to the Governors Highway Safety Association, pedestrian fatalities in North Carolina surged by nearly 30% during the first half of 2024 compared to the same period in 2023. While the national rate dropped by about 3%, North Carolina saw one of the largest increases in pedestrian deaths statewide.

Since 2010, pedestrian fatalities have risen by 77 percent — far outpacing the 22 percent rise in all other traffic-related deaths during that timeframe.

“Factors such as roadway conditions, lighting, and overall visibility are always closely analyzed during an investigation,” said Candice Bond, a Managing Partner with Bond Legal.

“Accident reconstruction experts are often needed to help determine how an incident unfolded. All of these resources are essential for ensuring that victims and families receive the compensation they are entitled to after a serious collision,” Bond added.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

“It is generally a driver’s responsibility to yield to pedestrians,” said Stefano Formica, of counsel at Bond Legal. Depending on the findings of the investigation, the family of Natalia Duque-Wilckens may pursue a wrongful death claim.

“Families of wrongful death victims can seek compensation for loss of companionship and income, emotional distress, funeral expenses, pain, and suffering,” Formica said.

An attorney can help guide families through the legal process while ensuring their rights remain protected during such an overwhelming time.

“Insurance companies often push for quick settlements that fall far short of what families deserve,” Formica added. “A skilled attorney will work to ensure victims’ families are treated fairly and receive appropriate compensation.”
