MAHONING, OH, (October 16, 2025) – A state trooper was tragically killed, and another man was injured Thursday in a multi-vehicle collision on Ohio 11 in Mahoning County.
A 40-year-old trooper had stopped to assist a disabled tractor-trailer in the right lane after its driver reported striking an object in the roadway. While the trooper sat inside his patrol car with emergency lights activated, another tractor-trailer driven by a Canfield resident struck the cruiser from behind.
The impact pushed the patrol vehicle into the disabled truck.
Nelson De Jesus Herrera Vasquez, the driver of the disabled tractor-trailer, was standing nearby when the cruiser hit him. Emergency responders airlifted Vasquez to a hospital for treatment. Authorities have not yet released details on his condition.
The responding trooper was pronounced dead at the scene. The second tractor-trailer driver was not injured.
The Canfield post of the Ohio Highway Patrol is investigating the fatal crash.
