Nathan Brown Held in Sanitation Truck Hit-Run crash in St. Petersburg

ST. PETERSBURG, FL (May 30, 2026) — A City of St. Petersburg sanitation employee has been charged following a fatal hit-and-run crash involving a garbage truck Saturday morning, according to the St. Petersburg Police Department.

Police said the incident occurred at approximately 6:30 a.m. in an alley near 17 3rd Street North. Investigators allege that a city-operated garbage truck struck a 49-year-old woman who was lying in the alleyway.

The woman sustained fatal injuries in the collision and was pronounced dead as a result of the crash.

Authorities identified the driver as 51-year-old Nathan Brown. According to police, Brown left the scene after the collision but was later located by investigators.

Brown has been charged with leaving the scene of a crash, police said.

Officials have not yet released the identity of the deceased woman. The circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation.

CRASH INVESTIGATION

A sanitation truck can weigh up to 30,000 pounds, making collisions involving these large commercial vehicles especially dangerous and often resulting in catastrophic injuries or fatalities.

In many hit-and-run incidents, at-fault motorists attempt to avoid responsibility by leaving the scene. However, law enforcement agencies frequently pursue these cases, and criminal charges can follow when suspects are identified.

Leaving the scene of a collision is a criminal offense, and statistics show that more than one hit-and-run crash occurs every minute across the United States.

Candice Bond, an experienced hit-and-run and commercial vehicle accident attorney, said that independent investigations are critical in protecting the rights of victims and their families.

“Commercial vehicle crashes are often complex, and many factors can play a role in these types of accidents,” said Bond, who is a Managing Partner of Bond Legal.

“A skilled attorney can protect victims from trucking companies, which often send their own investigators to crash sites and possess a variety of resources they can utilize to defend a negligent truck driver.

“Your lawyer can advocate for you by hiring expert witnesses, conducting driver background checks, locating witnesses to the crash, and reviewing applicable insurance coverage, while carefully guiding a victim through the legal process.”

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the outcome of the investigation, the victim’s family may have grounds to pursue a wrongful death claim. In such cases, surviving relatives may seek compensation for damages including loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional distress following a tragic accident.

“The stress and sorrow can be extremely overwhelming after losing a loved one in an accident,” said Stefano Formica, of counsel at Bond Legal.

“We understand just what families must go through, and having their rights protected is vital. A wrongful death lawyer will stay updated on the official investigation and help ensure that their legal rights and best interests are protected.”

“An attorney can help protect victims and their families from large insurance companies and their legal teams while thoroughly examining all aspects of the accident. Legal counsel can serve as a strong advocate for families coping with the loss of a loved one and work to safeguard their rights throughout the process.”

Additionally, the injured victim may have the right to pursue a personal injury claim. Formica noted that, “Injured victims involved in a collision often seek a personal injury claim to cover the cost of medical bills, future medical care, loss of income, emotional trauma, and pain and suffering.”
