Fatal Memphis DUI collision leads to arrest of Daniel Thomas

MEMPHIS, TN, (April 23, 2026) – A woman was killed Thursday night after being struck by an alleged impaired driver while standing beside her disabled vehicle on Union Avenue in Memphis, police reported.

According to authorities, the incident occurred at approximately 9 p.m. when a vehicle driven by 67-year-old Daniel Thomas struck the unidentified woman.

Investigators said the victim’s vehicle had become inoperable, and witnesses indicated she had activated her hazard lights while standing nearby.

Officers at the scene reported that Thomas admitted to consuming a large amount of alcohol, and they noted a strong odor of alcohol coming from him.

Thomas was taken into custody and charged with driving under the influence, public intoxication, reckless driving, and driving without a license or insurance.

The investigation remains ongoing.

DWI CRASH INVESTIGATION

According to the Tennessee Highway Safety Office, one in three fatal crashes involved a driver under the influence.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recently reported that Tennessee experienced the second-largest increase in drunk driving deaths over two years. When a driver is under the influence, they can suffer from impaired judgment, reduced vision, decreased coordination, and slower reaction times. Candice Bond, an experienced DUI accident attorney, shared her perspective on incidents like this.

“Separate from any criminal charges, a victim’s family may have the right to pursue compensation through a civil lawsuit against the responsible party,” said Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal and a national analyst for Accident Injury News. “By serving as an advocate, an attorney can help guide grieving families through this difficult period, protect their legal rights, and help ensure that impaired drivers are held accountable for their actions.”

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

The family members of the victim killed in this accident may be entitled to a wrongful death claim. Family members of wrongful death victims may pursue compensation for loss of companionship, pain, suffering, and emotional distress following a tragic accident.

“We understand the immense challenges families face after such a devastating loss, and protecting their rights is essential,” said Stefano Formica, Of Counsel with Bond Legal. “A wrongful death attorney will monitor the official investigation and help ensure that the family’s interests are fully represented. Loved ones of victims may seek damages for loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional distress following a catastrophic incident.”
