Margaret Hopfensperger dies in Appleton red-light DUI crash

APPLETON, WI, (April 9, 2026) – A 72-year-old woman, Margaret Hopfensperger, died after sustaining critical injuries in a two-vehicle crash caused by an intoxicated teenage driver earlier this month in Appleton.

According to the Appleton Police Department, the crash occurred just before 7 a.m. on April 9 at the intersection of Wisconsin Avenue and Meade Street. Investigators said a 17-year-old driver ran a red light and collided with another vehicle, causing one of the vehicles to overturn.

Authorities confirmed that the teenager was driving under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash.

Hopfensperger, a passenger in one of the vehicles, was critically injured and transported for medical care. She later succumbed to her injuries on April 24. Her husband, who was also in the vehicle, sustained serious injuries and remains hospitalized.

The teenage driver was also hospitalized with significant injuries and has not been placed in detention due to his medical condition. The Outagamie County District Attorney is reviewing multiple charges, including homicide by use of a vehicle with a prohibited alcohol content.

The investigation into the crash remains ongoing.

DUI ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION

This crash underscores how preventable impaired driving incidents can be. Drivers under the influence pose a significant danger to everyone on the road and can cause devastating consequences.

“Drivers impaired by alcohol or drugs may face criminal charges when a crash results in injury or death,” said Candice Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal.

She further explained, “In addition to criminal proceedings, the victim’s family may also have the right to pursue financial compensation through a civil lawsuit against the responsible party.”

Data from the National Safety Council shows that 10 percent of fatal traffic accidents involve drivers impaired by alcohol, drugs, or medications, making such incidents the second-leading cause of roadway deaths in the United States.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

As the investigation continues, the family of Margaret Hopfensperger may be eligible to pursue a wrongful death claim. Families who lose loved ones in fatal crashes can seek damages for loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional distress.

“The emotional toll after losing a loved one in a tragic accident can be overwhelming,” said Stefano Formica, of counsel with Bond Legal.

“We recognize the challenges families face during such times, and ensuring their rights are protected is essential. A wrongful death attorney can monitor the progress of the investigation and help safeguard the family’s legal interests,” Formica added.
