KERSHAW COUNTY, S.C. — A Columbia woman died after a wrong-way collision on Interstate 20 Saturday night that also claimed the life of a Georgia man.
Jaquitta Henry, 34, died at a hospital after a 25-year-old Fort Eisenhower, Georgia, resident driving a 2022 Kia K5 west in the eastbound lanes struck her 2006 Toyota Avalon near milepost 86 around 9 p.m. The Georgia man was pronounced dead at the scene, while emergency crews transported both occupants of Henry’s Toyota to area hospitals.
Henry succumbed to her injuries after arrival. A second person in the Toyota sustained injuries and remains hospitalized.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol continues investigating the circumstances that led to the wrong-way driving incident. Officials have not determined how long the Kia traveled in the wrong direction before the collision.
The crash closed eastbound I-20 for several hours while crews worked the scene.
The Highway Patrol has not indicated whether alcohol or drugs played a role.
