James Thompson tragically killed in Anderson County bicycle accident

ANDERSON, S.C. — A bicyclist died after being struck by a vehicle early Monday morning on Shockley Ferry Road.

James Patrick Thompson, 52, was treated at the scene and transported to AnMed Hospital in Anderson. He succumbed to his injuries at 6:15 a.m., according to the Anderson County Coroner’s Office.

The crash occurred around 2 a.m. The investigation indicates Thompson was riding his bicycle when he entered the path of a vehicle traveling in the same direction.

The Anderson County Coroner’s Office, South Carolina Highway Patrol, and Anderson County Sheriff’s Office are investigating the incident.

The Anderson County Fire Department, Medshore EMS, Anderson County EMS, and South Carolina Highway Patrol responded to the scene.

BICYCLE CRASH INVESTIGATION

The South Carolina Department of Public Safety reported that the state’s bicycle fatalities rose dramatically from 23 deaths in 2023 to 34 deaths in 2024—nearly a 50% increase. This occurred even as overall traffic deaths dropped to the lowest level in four years.

South Carolina ranks as the fourth most dangerous state for bicyclists nationally.

Candice Bond, an experienced bicycle accident attorney, emphasized the critical importance of conducting an independent investigation promptly to ensure evidence preservation in cases of this nature.

“Having the proper resources is extremely important when investigating a bicycle accident case and demonstrating that there was negligence on the part of another party,” said Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal.

“In addition to the diligent work of law enforcement, an attorney has the resources to interview expert witnesses, conduct defendant background checks, and review applicable insurance coverage,” added Bond, who is also a National Legal Analyst for Accident Injury News.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the results of any investigations, the family of James Thompson may pursue a wrongful death claim. Survivors often seek damages for loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional distress following a tragic or catastrophic accident.

Bond said, “Grieving families of victims are sometimes overwhelmed by the legal processes that are in place to protect their rights. An attorney can be a valuable and compassionate resource to help guide a family during this difficult time and ensure that those left behind receive the restitution they are entitled to.”
