Jadelyn Cariaga Dies After Head-On Highway Collision in HI

HAWAII, HI, (May 15, 2026) – Hawaii Island police have released additional details regarding a double-fatal motor vehicle collision Friday night on Daniel K. Inouye Highway.

Authorities said a westbound 2018 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck lost control while navigating a curve near mile marker 13 before crossing into the eastbound lane and colliding head-on with a 2008 Dodge Ram 3500 towing a trailer carrying a mini excavator.

A backseat passenger in the Toyota, identified as 24-year-old Jadelyn Cariaga of Hilo, sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said a second passenger, a 29-year-old resident of Pahoa, also died in the collision.

Two other individuals involved in the crash, including another passenger in the Toyota and the driver of the Dodge Ram, suffered serious injuries and were airlifted to The Queen’s Medical Center for treatment. The Toyota driver and a passenger in the Dodge sustained injuries described as non-life-threatening.

Investigators continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the crash and are asking anyone with information to contact authorities at 808-961-2339.

HEAD-ON CRASH INVESTIGATION

Head-on crashes occur less often than other types of collisions but are frequently deadly because of the tremendous force involved, often resulting in catastrophic injuries and fatalities.

According to the Insurance Information Institute, an estimated 3,631 motorists die annually in head-on crashes across the United States.

Candice Bond, an experienced accident attorney, said that in cases such as this, it is essential to conduct an independent investigation as quickly as possible to help preserve evidence and protect the rights of victims’ families.

“An attorney can collect the proper evidence to help prove that a driver’s actions were reckless, which requires a variety of resources,” said Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal and a national analyst for Accident Injury News.

“In addition to the diligent work of law enforcement, an attorney can re-interview important witnesses, analyze surveillance footage from the scene of the crash, and obtain phone and texting records of the liable party. Serving as an advocate, an attorney can compassionately guide families who have lost loved ones during this difficult time while helping protect their legal rights.”

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the investigation, the family of Jadelyn Cariaga may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim. Relatives of wrongful death victims may seek compensation for loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional distress following a tragic or catastrophic accident such as this.

“The stress and sorrow can be extremely overwhelming after losing a loved one in an accident,” said Stefano Formica, of counsel at Bond Legal.

“We understand just what families must go through, and having their rights protected is vital. A wrongful death attorney will stay updated on the official investigation and help ensure that their legal rights and best interests are protected.”
