Jacqueline Merritt killed in Gonzales LA pedestrian accident

GONZALES, LA, (April 19, 2026) – A 20-year-old woman from Gonzales died Sunday night after being struck by a vehicle while walking along Louisiana 44 in Ascension Parish.

According to Louisiana State Police, the crash occurred shortly before 9 p.m. near Villa Court N. Investigators said Jacqueline Merritt was walking south in the southbound lane of LA 44 when a 2012 Chevrolet Silverado traveling in the same direction struck her in the center of the roadway.

Following the initial impact, the Silverado came to a stop and was subsequently rear-ended by a 2023 Ram 1500 pickup truck, also traveling southbound.

Merritt sustained critical injuries and was transported to a local hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries.

Authorities said the drivers of both vehicles were properly restrained and were not injured. Impairment is not suspected; however, routine toxicology samples were collected for further analysis.

The crash remains under investigation by Louisiana State Police.

PEDESTRIAN ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION

In 2024, Louisiana recorded 161 pedestrian fatalities, reflecting nearly a 10% rise from the previous year. This increase continues a concerning long-term trend in which pedestrian deaths have surpassed those of vehicle occupants.

The Louisiana Highway Safety Commission points to speeding, distracted driving, and limited nighttime visibility as contributing factors. State agencies have responded with safety campaigns and traffic-calming initiatives aimed at reducing pedestrian risks.

The Governors Highway Safety Association also notes that the growing number of SUVs and pickup trucks can make it more difficult for drivers to see pedestrians, contributing to a nationwide rise of nearly 60% in pedestrian fatalities since 2013.

“Road conditions, visibility, and lighting are all potential contributing factors that must be carefully evaluated,” said Candice Bond, Managing Partner with Bond Legal.

“In some cases, an accident reconstruction team is necessary to determine exactly what occurred. These resources are essential to help clients pursue compensation for damages or losses following a crash,” added Bond, an experienced pedestrian accident attorney.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

“It is generally the responsibility of drivers to yield to pedestrians,” said Stefano Formica, Of Counsel at Bond Legal. The family of Jacqueline Merritt may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim.

“Families of wrongful death victims can seek damages for loss of income, companionship, pain and suffering, funeral costs, and emotional distress following a tragic accident,” Formica said.

An attorney can serve as an advocate, helping guide the family through this difficult time while ensuring their rights are protected.

“Insurance companies may attempt to push victims into accepting quick settlements for far less than a claim’s true value,” Formica added. “An attorney will strongly advocate for fair compensation and proper treatment of their client.”
