WSPD: Humberto Zavala Rodriguez dies in NC High Point Rd crash

WINSTON-SALEM, NC – April 12, 2026: Authorities in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, are investigating a fatal rollover crash that killed 31-year-old Humberto Zavala Rodriguez early Sunday morning.

According to the Winston-Salem Police Department, a 2008 Hyundai was traveling south on High Point Road at approximately 12:25 a.m. when the driver lost control. The vehicle left the roadway, struck an unoccupied parked car, and pushed it into a nearby residence. The Hyundai then overturned and struck a tree.

Both occupants were ejected from the vehicle during the crash.

Rodriguez was pronounced dead at the scene despite life-saving efforts. A 35-year-old passenger sustained serious injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital. The passenger’s identity has not been released.

Authorities indicated that excessive speed is believed to be a contributing factor in the crash. The Winston-Salem Police Department’s Traffic Enforcement Unit is continuing to investigate.

CRASH INVESTIGATION

Numerous factors contribute to the rise in traffic fatalities, including driver behavior such as speeding, impairment by alcohol or drugs, and distracted driving, particularly cellphone use. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported 8,055 fatalities in motor vehicle crashes during the first quarter of 2025.

While investigators continue to review the circumstances of this crash, Candice Bond, an experienced accident attorney and Managing Partner of Bond Legal, said that an independent investigation can be critical.

“In addition to the diligent work of law enforcement, an attorney can re-interview key witnesses, review any available surveillance footage from the crash area, and obtain phone and text records of potentially responsible parties,” said Bond, a national analyst for Accident Injury News.

“Time is critical in these cases, and families must ensure that all evidence is preserved and properly examined.”

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the investigation, the family of Humberto Zavala Rodriguez may be entitled to pursue a wrongful death claim. Eligible damages may include loss of companionship, pain and suffering, funeral expenses, and emotional distress.

“The grief and emotional impact following such a sudden loss can be overwhelming,” said Stefano Formica, of counsel at Bond Legal. “It is essential that families understand their rights are protected. A wrongful death attorney can stay informed on the investigation and help ensure their legal interests are fully represented.”
