Houston police charge Pablo Maravilla after single-car crash kills passenger

HOUSTON, TX, (June 28, 2026) — A Houston man has been charged with intoxication manslaughter following a single-vehicle crash that claimed the life of a passenger early Sunday morning in northwest Houston, according to police.

Investigators said Pablo Maravilla, 50, was driving a Toyota Tundra in the 7000 block of Hollister Street at approximately 4 a.m. when the pickup was traveling at a high rate of speed. Police said the vehicle struck a raised concrete sidewalk, causing the driver to lose control before crashing into a metal fence.

The passenger, whose identity has not been released, suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Maravilla was transported to a hospital following the collision. Authorities said he has been charged with intoxication manslaughter.

The crash remains under investigation as police continue to review the circumstances surrounding the fatal incident.

FATAL SINGLE-VEHICLE ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION

Authorities continue to investigate the fatal collision. Tragically, approximately 36,000 people lose their lives in motor vehicle crashes across the United States each year. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, speeding remains the leading cause of fatal crashes, followed by alcohol or drug impairment, failure to maintain the proper lane, failure to yield the right of way, and distracted driving.

Candice Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal, said that in cases such as this, it is essential for an experienced attorney to conduct an independent investigation. Such an investigation can help protect the rights of victims and their families while assisting them during insurance negotiations.

Bond, a national analyst for Accident Injury News, emphasized that no financial recovery can replace the loss of a loved one. However, ensuring that victims and their families receive experienced legal representation remains critically important.

“Insurance companies often attempt to pressure victims and their families into accepting quick settlements for far less than a claim may be worth,” Bond said. “Their focus is often on limiting financial exposure rather than addressing the lasting impact of a tragic loss. An attorney will advocate aggressively to help ensure clients are treated fairly and receive appropriate compensation.”

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Based on the information available at this time, the family of the deceased passenger may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim seeking damages for funeral expenses, loss of love and companionship, emotional trauma, pain and suffering, and other related losses.

“A wrongful death claim is a civil action seeking financial compensation on behalf of the deceased person’s estate or surviving relatives,” said Candice Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal. “Civil proceedings are separate from criminal cases and are governed by different legal standards and procedures.”

“The passenger’s family may also pursue a claim through the insurance policy covering the vehicle if the driver is ultimately found liable,” Bond added. “Filing such a claim generally does not affect the claimant’s own insurance policy because it is made against another party’s coverage.”
