High-speed SUV accident near Clinton kills Carson Faircloth, NCHP says

SAMPSON, NC, (May 03, 2026) – A 17-year-old passenger was killed and a driver seriously injured Sunday morning in a single-vehicle crash just outside Clinton in Sampson County.

According to the North Carolina Highway Patrol, a 2005 Toyota SUV was traveling at a high rate of speed on Airport Road near Summertree Court when the driver lost control around 9:18 a.m. The vehicle ran off the roadway, and the driver overcorrected before the SUV struck a ditch and then a tree.

Carson A. Faircloth, 17, who was a passenger in the vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver, identified as an 18-year-old man from Salemburg, sustained serious injuries and was transported to WakeMed for treatment.

Officials said no additional details were immediately available.

The North Carolina Highway Patrol continues to investigate the crash.

CRASH INVESTIGATION

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, speeding was responsible for 29 percent of all traffic fatalities in 2023, totaling 11,775 deaths across the United States. Driving at excessive speeds not only increases the likelihood of crashes but also significantly worsens the severity of impacts, often leading to serious injury or death.

“Road conditions, visibility, and lighting are among the many factors that are carefully reviewed in these cases,” said Candice Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal.

“In some instances, accident reconstruction experts are needed to determine exactly how the crash occurred. These resources play an essential role in helping victims and their families pursue compensation for their losses,” Bond added.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the results of the investigation, the family of Carson Faircloth may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim. Families of victims in such cases can seek compensation for loss of companionship, emotional suffering, and other damages following a tragic accident.

“The emotional toll after losing a loved one in a crash can be incredibly difficult to cope with,” said Stefano Formica, of counsel at Bond Legal.

“We understand the challenges families face during such times, and protecting their legal rights is crucial. A wrongful death attorney can monitor the investigation and help ensure the family’s interests are represented,” he added.
