EFFINGHAM COUNTY, Ill. — A 58-year-old Altamont man died in a head-on collision Sunday afternoon, June 5, that injured four others along Illinois 40.
Harland J. Neville was pronounced dead at the scene after his black Chevrolet pickup crossed the centerline at the ‘S’ curves west of Country Club Road around 4:18 p.m. The eastbound truck struck a westbound minivan head-on.
An adult female driving the minivan was airlifted to Carle Hospital in Urbana with serious injuries. Three juvenile passengers in the minivan were transported to HSHS St. Anthony Hospital in Effingham for treatment.
First responders from multiple agencies arrived to find Neville unresponsive in his vehicle. Emergency crews worked to extract the minivan occupants before transporting them to area hospitals.
The crash occurred at a notorious stretch of Route 40 known for its sharp curves.
The Effingham County Sheriff’s Department, Effingham City Police, and Illinois State Police responded to the scene.
