DETROIT, MI (June 28, 2026) — Two pedestrians were killed early Sunday after they were struck by an alleged intoxicated driver on Detroit’s west side, according to the Detroit Police Department.
Police said 43-year-old Erica Smith and a 51-year-old Detroit man were found in the roadway at the intersection of W. McNichols Road and Ardmore Street at approximately 2:16 a.m. Both victims were pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities said the suspected driver was also found lying in the roadway and was transported to a hospital for treatment. Investigators determined that the 29-year-old Detroit man was allegedly intoxicated at the time of the collision.
The suspect has been charged with two counts of second-degree murder, two counts of operating while intoxicated causing death, and two counts of reckless driving causing death.
Police also said the man refused a blood alcohol test and was remanded to jail following his arraignment.
The Detroit Police Department continues to investigate the fatal crash.
