Edinburg police investigate hit-and-run that killed David Moreno

EDINBURG, TX (June 26, 2026) — A 43-year-old bicyclist was killed early Friday morning after being struck by a vehicle whose driver fled the scene in Edinburg, according to the Edinburg Police Department.

Authorities identified the victim as David Moreno. Police said the fatal collision occurred at approximately 1 a.m. in the 2000 block of North McColl Road.

Investigators determined Moreno was traveling southbound in the center turn lane when an unknown motorist struck him from behind. Moreno suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead following the crash.

During the investigation, officers identified the suspect vehicle as a 2014 Dodge Caravan. Police later arrested a juvenile driver who is expected to face a charge of accident involving personal injury or death, a second-degree felony.

The Edinburg Police Department continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the deadly hit-and-run.

CRASH INVESTIGATION NEEDED

A motorist involved in a hit-and-run crash is legally required to remain at the scene and notify law enforcement authorities. Failing to do so can result in criminal charges and other legal consequences. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 2,872 people died in hit-and-run crashes in 2023, down from 2,972 the previous year.

“Bicyclists are particularly vulnerable on the road, and many factors can contribute to serious crashes,” said Candice Bond, a Managing Partner with Bond Legal.

“It is essential to determine the precise cause of these types of accidents. An attorney has the resources to examine available insurance coverage, retain expert witnesses, conduct background investigations, and locate witnesses. We carefully guide the family of the victim through the process.”

“Drivers who flee the scene of a collision that injures or kills a bicyclist or pedestrian may face criminal charges. In addition to those criminal proceedings, victims of hit-and-run injury accidents or their families may also have the right to pursue a civil lawsuit,” said Bond, an experienced hit-and-run accident attorney.

“Along with reviewing the police report, an attorney will carefully examine all factors that may have contributed to the crash,” Bond added.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the results of any investigations, the family members of David Moreno may be entitled to a wrongful death claim. Survivors of wrongful death victims may seek damages for loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional distress following a catastrophic accident.

Stefano Formica, of counsel at Bond Legal, said, “Families grieving the loss of a loved one are often overwhelmed by the legal procedures designed to protect their rights.”

“An attorney can provide valuable guidance and compassionate support during this difficult time while helping ensure that surviving family members receive the restitution to which they may be entitled.”
