Donna Wisniewski-Balinsat dies in San Antonio school parking crash

SAN ANTONIO, TX, (April 22, 2026) – A 66-year-old school staff member was fatally injured in a pedestrian crash Wednesday morning outside an elementary school on the Northwest Side of San Antonio.

According to San Antonio police, Donna Wisniewski-Balinsat was struck at approximately 7:15 a.m. in the parking lot area near Raba Elementary School on Raba Drive, shortly before the school day began.

Authorities said Wisniewski-Balinsat, who had served as a day tutor at the school and previously worked as an elementary teacher in the Northside Independent School District, was crossing the parking lot when a vehicle driven by a 32-year-old woman turned left in an attempt to park.

Police reported that the vehicle struck the victim with both its front and rear tires.

Wisniewski-Balinsat was transported to a hospital, where she later died from her injuries.

In a message to families, Raba Elementary Principal Cole Bader said grief counselors would be available on campus to support students and staff.

“Our entire school community grieves the loss of this very special member of our Raba family,” the letter stated.

The incident remains under investigation.

FATAL PEDESTRIAN ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION

Authorities are continuing to investigate the crash, highlighting the ongoing dangers faced by pedestrians.

According to the Texas Department of Transportation, 5,975 pedestrian-involved crashes occurred in Texas in 2019, resulting in 669 deaths — a 5% increase compared to the previous year.

“Roadway conditions, visibility, lighting, and driver distraction are all factors that must be carefully evaluated,” said Candice Bond, Managing Partner with Bond Legal and a national analyst for Accident Injury News. “In some cases, accident reconstruction experts are utilized to determine exactly what happened. These efforts are essential in helping families pursue compensation after a serious or fatal crash.”

Data from the Governors Highway Safety Association shows pedestrian fatalities in the United States have increased faster than other types of traffic deaths. In 2019, an estimated 6,590 pedestrians were killed, the highest number in more than three decades. Additionally, the National Safety Council reports that approximately 150,000 pedestrians were injured in 2018.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

The family of Donna Wisniewski-Balinsat may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim for damages, including loss of companionship, funeral expenses, emotional distress, and pain and suffering.

“Drivers generally have a responsibility to yield to pedestrians,” said Stefano Formica, of counsel at Bond Legal. “An attorney can serve as an advocate for the family, helping guide them through this difficult period while ensuring their rights are protected.”

Formica added, “Insurance companies may attempt to push families into quick settlements that do not reflect the full value of their loss. An experienced attorney will advocate strongly to ensure fair compensation and respectful treatment.”
