Dion Mumphrey killed by pickup truck in CA hit-and-run collision

SANTA CLARITA, CA, (April 10, 2026) – Authorities are searching for a driver involved in a fatal hit-and-run crash that claimed the life of a pedestrian Friday night in Santa Clarita.

According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, the incident occurred at approximately 8:22 p.m. at the intersection of Magic Mountain Parkway and Tourney Road.

A large, dark-colored pickup truck traveling westbound struck 39-year-old Dion Mumphrey. The driver fled the scene and continued along Magic Mountain Parkway without stopping.

Emergency responders arrived but were unable to save Mumphrey, who was pronounced dead at the scene. The investigation remains ongoing.

FATAL HIT-AND-RUN INVESTIGATION

California leads the nation in fatal hit-and-run incidents, with 457 reported deaths in 2023 alone, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. More than 10% of all fatal crashes in the state involve a driver fleeing the scene—nearly double the national average.

Urban areas such as San Francisco and Los Angeles report especially high numbers of these incidents. Many occur at night and frequently involve pedestrians, highlighting the ongoing risks associated with hit-and-run crashes.

Candice Bond, an experienced hit-and-run accident attorney, emphasized that an independent investigation should be conducted promptly to protect victims’ rights.

“Having the right resources is essential to properly investigate a hit-and-run case and establish negligence,” said Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal. “Factors such as road conditions, visibility, and lighting must all be carefully evaluated. These steps are critical in helping families seek justice and financial compensation.”

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the results of the investigation, the family of Dion Mumphrey may be entitled to a wrongful death claim for funeral expenses, loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional trauma.

“A wrongful death occurs when a person or entity’s negligent or wrongful actions lead to another person’s death,” said Stefano Formica, of counsel at Bond Legal. “When fatal crashes result from unsafe or impaired driving, distracted driving, or speeding, families often have the right to pursue a civil action against the responsible party.”
